SOF Special Guest at SF Giants Memorial Day Game

This Memorial Day, we had the honor to be the featured nonprofit at the San Francisco Giants baseball game. The day and events leading up to it (you can read about some of our Sentinels meeting one of the team’s pitcher’s here) were made possible by our long-standing partnership with PG&E, a proud supporter of our program and Veterans’ post-military advancement.

Prior to the start of the game, Sentinels and their families were given a private tour of the stadium, complete with SF Giants history and trivia. Sentinels Kyle Garcia and Brian Vargas were sporting their new personalized team jerseys, gifted to them during a previous meeting with SF Giants pitcher George Kontos.

The present Sentinels and SOF board members and staff were introduced to the audience and invited to the field during the game’s opening ceremony. A video featuring Sentinels of Freedom’s mission and influence on Sentinels Garcia and Vargas was shown, featuring the two former Marines’ meeting with Kontos at our Student Veteran Resource Center at SF State University (you can view the video feature here). Then, Sentinel Vargas was introduced to throw the ceremonial first pitch, an occasion that earned him the admiration of many a young fan present.

After, in honor of our nation’s fallen service men and women, armed forces members presented the United States flag onto the field in a gracious ceremony that included a moment of silence to remember those service members no longer with us.

Following the ceremony, Sentinels enjoyed the game with each other and their families. An interview between Mary King, SOF board member and Vice President of Human Resources for PG&E, and Sentinel Kyle Garcia was also aired on TV as part of the game day broadcast.

The day was a very special one, and we are grateful for having been able to be a part of it – especially on such an important and humbling occasion as Memorial Day.
