Sentinels of Freedom

Spc. Jake Brown

Army veteran Jake Brown accepted the first Sentinels of Freedom Scholarship in 2004. Crushed by a tank while serving in Germany, he was in a coma for 10 days, and wasn’t expected to live. But now, he is back in his hometown, and he is thriving.

Jake was determined to take hold of the opportunities offered by the Sentinels of Freedom Scholarship program, and use them to succeed. He returned to his hometown of San Ramon, Calif., with his wife, Petra, after recovering from multiple surgeries. The couple was met with a new home, filled with furniture and dozens of people in the community wanting to help.

He’s currently working for UPS, has earned two promotions, and is on the dean’s list at Diablo Valley College. Jake wants to ultimately attend UC Berkeley’s Haas School of Business. He lives in a rent-free apartment donated by Shapell Homes.
