Ian Newland

Ian Newland Ian Newland was injured in December 2006 while his unit was patrolling an area in Adhamiyah - in northeast Bagdad. An insurgent threw a hand grenade into the Humvee that Ian and four other soldiers were riding in. 19 year old Ross McGinnis, the gunner on board, first tried to deflect the grenade, but it fell inside the vehicle. When he saw no one was going to be able to get out in time, McGinnis used his body to shield the others from the deadly blast. He was killed instantly. The others survived.

Ian was the most severely injured of the four soldiers who lived. He suffered from mild Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), shrapnel wounds to face, both arms, right hip, both legs, and right knee. There are several pieces of shrapnel still lodged inside that doctors can not remove. He has regained some use of his left hand but the pain from both his hand and legs is extreme at times.

Still - the 27 year old is grateful to be with his wife, Erin, and two children, daughter Haley and son Dryden. A native of Pipestone, Minnesota, the Newland family has now settled in Denver in a home that was decorated by volunteers from RE/MAX International, Inc. Ian is working at RE/MAX International and is looking forward to completing his education.
